Welcome to the Town of Herkimer, NY

The Town of Herkimer, one of the earliest settled areas along the Mohawk River, traces its roots to Palatine German immigrants of the early 1700s and the historic Burnetsfield Patent of 1725. Rich in colonial heritage—with its name resulting from an 18th-century mapping error—the town grew around important river crossings and later became home to American Revolutionary War hero General Nicholas Herkimer. Today, the community spans 32 square miles and includes the Village of Herkimer, local hamlets, and key commercial corridors, offering a blend of history, natural beauty, and modern amenities. With thriving businesses, recreational opportunities along the Mohawk River, West Canada Creek, and Erie Canal, and a strong civic structure, the Town of Herkimer remains a vibrant hub for residents, visitors, and economic growth in Herkimer County.
